NS Lab 1

Entrée libre
Hôtel71, HEAT & H7
70—71 quai Perrache 69002 Lyon
Wednesday 25 May
10.30—00.00

talks & interviews

For cultural and social structures, Aura Burzynski will present L'atelier des artistes en exil, its activities and its territorial development. The workshop will also provide keys to understanding and skills to identify the needs and set up a cultural cooperation project on the inclusion of artists in exile aimed at cultural structures. How to make the link between national contexts and a transnational theme such as exile and migration? How to think about the impact of a European project so that it can serve the development of initiatives at the territorial/local level?

Facilitation: Aura Burzynski from L'atelier des artistes en exil

In partnership with L'atelier des artistes en exil

L'atelier des artistes en exil (aa-e) aims to identify artists in exile from all origins, all disciplines, to accompany them according to their situation and their needs, to offer them working spaces and to put them in touch with professional networks (French and European), in order to provide them with the means to test their practice and to restructure themselves

From Afghanistan to Ukraine, from migrants in the Mediterranean to the environmentally displaced, today’s geopolitical context is an increasingly tense arena in which migration, whether through choice or by force, has become both a social fact and a major issue of our time. How can we capture the social, political and philosophical process of migration within a musical creation? How can we translate the displacement, the sideways step, the crossing of geographical and cultural identities? By mobilising intersubjectivity – i.e. the ability to consider the thoughts and capacity of others to decide – music enables us to dismantle migration-related stereotypes and to express the nuances of plural identities.

With : Bawrut (artiste, IT), Diana Azzuz (artiste, UA), Mous Bahri (artiste, LB), Paloma Colombe (artiste, FR & DZ), modération : Amine Metani (Arabstazy, FR).

As a member of EU-MED*, a European consortium working on “the narration of migration”, European Lab is committed to challenging the narratives that surround migration. How do they come about? Do they lead to understanding or to irrational fears? How can we raise awareness of unifying, lucid, inspirational narratives that run counter to security-related psychosis, cultural isolationism and defeatism? With these things in mind, the most recent editions of European Lab, in Brussels and Paris, have showcased testimonies of migratory journeys, stories of hospitality, politically engaged speeches and artistic performances.

In Lyon, NS Lab will propose to analyse the narratives of migration that appear in the media on both sides of the Mediterranean, from Tunisia to Eastern Europe. How are mass migratory movements, both within the African continent (at their biggest) and on the borders of Europe, reported by the media? Who writes those narratives, and how are they perceived? At the same time, how can people who are or have been on the move wrest (back) control of their own stories, by producing media content or even launching their own platform in the image of Guiti News? Ultimately, this means welcoming and supporting refugee journalists to pursue their profession in spite of the various obstacles in their way, such as language barriers and precarious working conditions.
