Renata Avila is an international human rights and technology lawyer, specialising in intellectual property, access to information, and the impact of digital technologies on governance, trade, and geopolitics. She is CEO of the Open Knowledge Foundation (OKFN), promoting openness and developing digital public infrastructures globally.
Previously, Renata Avila focused on strategic litigation for access to information and justice, representing figures such as Rigoberta Menchú Tum, WikiLeaks, and Julian Assange. She is affiliated with the CNRS Centre for Internet and Society in France and was formerly with Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centred AI.
She serves on UN working groups on data governance and digital infrastructure, and sits on the boards of Open Future, Progressive International, and the Whistleblower Network Germany. She has authored two books and frequently writes on digital rights and technology in leading English and Spanish publications.
