NUITS SONORES : 6th FESTIVAL – THE NUITS SONORES STORY:
In 2003 the Arty Farty association organised the first ‘Nuits Sonores’ festival and succeeded in bringing together sharp, emergent music styles with more popular trends. Among the essential axes of the festival’s development are: research into Lyon’s unknown and symbolic places of architectural heritage, collaboration with numerous local actors from the electronic and innovative cultures and, opening the city to creators and initiators from around the world. More than 250 artists play each year at the ‘Nuits Sonores’ festival - from the most symbolic and international artists of the electronic music's history to the latest emergent musicians. In 2007 the ‘Nuits Sonores’ festival gathered over 50,000 people, including more than 250 journalists and almost 1,000 accredited professionals. Since its creation, a thousand artists from 30 countries have performed on the festival's stages, which are located every year in 40 to 50 places throughout Lyon.
NUITS SONORES 2008
The 6th ‘Nuits Sonores’ festival will take place in Lyon from 7th May 2008 to 11th May 2008. As with previous years, the festival will unfold in more than 40 places in the city: on industrial wasteland, concert venues, clubs, bars, galleries, cinemas or in symbolic places of Lyon’s architectural heritage. ‘Nuits Sonores’ continues its urban discoveries and maintains its priorities of an open and uncompromising programme as well as a high mobility throughout the city. This year the ‘Nuits Sonores’ festival will organise its main events in an industrial wasteland (the former SLI factory in Vaise, built in 1905), at the Charlemagne ice rink, Lyon’s National Opera amphitheatre (Amphithéatre de l’Opéra National de Lyon), the ELAC gardens (jardins de l’ELAC), the Rhone swimming pool (la Piscine du Rhône – The comeback!) and in most of the clubs and concert venues in town: (Transbordeur, Marché Gare, Plateforme, Ninkasi ...). Just like every year many events will be organised in the urban environment (streets, squares...).’Nuits Sonores’ is a festival dedicated to electronic and independent music trends and cultures. More than 1,000 artists have already performed during the five previous festivals (live acts, local and international DJ’s...).
2008 LEXICON:
Official opening / Wednesday 7th May 2008, from 19:30 to 23:00 – free by invitation – partners cocktail at 18:00
Every year the opening of the festival takes place in an original or symbolic place in Lyon (Institut Lumière, ELAC gardens) to welcome 1,500 (2000?) professionals, journalists, festival partners or electro music aficionados. It is an opportunity to focus on Lyon’s electronic scene. In 2008, the festival’s opening will take place, for the second time, in the now mythical Rhone swimming pool (Piscine du Rhône).

The ‘Apéros sonores’ have become an indispensable part of the festival over the last few years. They emphasize the Nuits Sonores’ and the ‘Circuit Electronique’s’ urban and itinerant aspects. The ‘Apéros Sonores’ aim is to create and spread the festive mood in the city prior to the ‘Nuits’. The ‘Apéros Sonores’ work closely with bars, pubs, and local actors. The 2008 five urban projects are organised by electronic music organizations and associations and are open to the public.

Images Sonores / During the festival
‘Images Sonores’ was created in 2008 by Arty Farty and supported by the Programme Lyonnais pour la Société de l'Information (PLSI, a local company specialised in information). The ‘Images Sonores’’ aim is to emphasize the role of digital pictures in the electronic music cultures. During the ‘Nuits Sonores’ festival, the ‘Images Sonores’ programme is, above all, a tool to create and broadcast digital arts. It also provides food for thought. In 2008 the axe will be centred on the concept of sensitive image through ‘Generative Art’, ‘Motion Design’ and a special cinematographic programme.
From Wednesday 7th May to Saturday 10th May 2008: conferences, workshops, concerts, screenings, programmes, original sets, creations, Carte Blanche programmes, cinemas, guests... in different venues and places of Lyon and its surroundings.
Glimpse of the programme: “Digital paradise” by Premium (generative art during the Nights), “Nuits Sonores’ city...” by Antoine Trollat and Laurent Graber (generative scenography and architecture of the main place), Tracks Night (TVprogram), Prefuse 73 live vs Superscript2, Gangpol und Mit, Club Transmediale...
Le Concert Spécial (the Special concert) / Sunday 11th May 2008
For three years now the ‘Nuits Sonores’ festival has been organising a special concert ‘Concert Spécial’, dedicated to the history of Electronic and Indie cultures. The aim is to focus on an artist, a concept or a sound experience and to present the event outside the festival’s programme, with a different approach to the festival’s dancefloor idea. The set has then a completely different meaning. The very special atmosphere enables the artists to build an exclusive relationship with the public. (Hence - James Chance and The Contortions, A Certain Ratio, Clinic, Pere Ubu and nine other talented musicians who bought to life the Christian Marclay’s videos, touching many festival-goers souls.). This year, the concert will be part of the ‘Carte Blanche’ to Berlin: created in 1981, Einsturzende Neubauten reunited and produced a new album, Alles Wieder Offen. True pioneers and free of any writing styles, Einsturzende Neubauten have, since their stunning creation in the 1980s, become an internationally known band celebrated for their experimental sounds. They have their own vision of music; use self-made instruments out of old/disused industrial equipment or scratch. The group members, Blixa Bargeld, Alexander Hacke, Jochen Arbeit, N. U. Unruh, and RudolphMoser, have worked with F.M. Einheit, (already known by the festival-goers).
20:00 – 00:00: Concert Spécial – €25
Transbordeur – 3, Boulevard Stalingrad – Lyon Villeurbanne
La Carte Blanche / During the festival
In collaboration with the Goethe-Institute
For the 6th running year, ‘Nuits Sonores’ gives ‘Carte blanche’ to an international city. Reflecting the urban heritage as well as the Electronic and Indie musical trends, the city is presented by several artists (Dj’s, VJ’s, film makers...).
After Marseille in 2003 (with the record company Bip-hop), Barcelona in 2004 (with the Sonar festival), Manchester in 2005 (with, among others, the representatives of the record company Factory and the Hacienda Club) and Paris in 2006 (F.Com, Laurent Garnier, tribute to Pacadis...). ‘Nuits Sonores’ has decided to give its 2008 Carte Blanche to the innovative and trendsetting city of Berlin. For ‘Nuits Sonores’, the choice was obvious: the ‘poor but sexy‘ city is the hub of electronic music. Since 2000, dozens of European and international artists have moved to the German capital. Over the last few years the city has become a cosmopolite and creative place, bubbling with ideas and new concepts. The very special lifestyle of Berliners, the bars, the ‘Imbiss’ German snacks, the brunches up to 18:00, and the ‘out of bed look’ are characteristics that make Berlin a unique city. Although the 2008 Carte Blanche’s aim is not to tell Berlin’s story, it will at least reflect the city’s musical wealth. Together with Alexander Hacke, master of this year’s Carte blanche, many artists from various musical backgrounds (rock, electronic, alternative...), the Transmediale Club, movie and documentary programmes, show and meetings, ‘Nuits Sonores’ 2008 will emphasize what we love in Berlin!
From Wednesday 7th May to Sunday 11th May 2008: concerts, movies, documentaries and performances in different places in Lyon
Glimpse of the programme: “Ship of fools” by Danielle de Picciotto and Alexander Hacke, Apparat band, Raz Ohara & the Odd Orchestra, Richard Ruin, Jessie Evans, documentaries such as “Zur rettung der popkulture”, “Berlin Babylon”, “Other side of Berlin”.
All day long / Thursday 8th May 2008
Created in 2006 to organise Laurent Garnier’s seven-hour live act, the ‘All day’ has become the festival’s Thursday afternoon must. After Louie Vega in 2007, ‘Nuits Sonores’ continues to be in touch with the inexhaustible richness of the New-York House Scene, and for the first time in France, the legendary Body & Soul will perform at the ‘Nuits Sonores’ festival. Francois K, Danny Krivit and Joaquin "Joe" Claussell, permanent DJ’s of Body & Soul will perform in this unique venue at the Rhone swimming pool.
15:00 – 22:30: All day long – €20
Piscine du Rhone – 8, Quai Claude Bernard – Lyon 7e
Extra ! / During the whole festival
Different places in the city
For this sixth edition, Arty Farty has decided to collect together in one unique programme all the unclassifiable events of the festival. Exit the "Parcours associé", the "Bars sonores",the warm-up and the afters. Now to give room for something really special, which includes all that, and much more.
To achieve this programme, Arty Farty called upon a group of local and national artists/performers who work for the recognition of electronic music cultures, but also all the people who have the heart and energy to create meetings, movement and excitement in the city.
The Extra Menu! : A panorama of visual and sound, festive, playful, creative and transversal propositions; all this around performances, unique works, workshops, installations, exhibitions, meetings, aperitifs, afters, which will instigate new, sometimes wild aesthetics, throughout the whole city as well as in the public areas.
Les Siestes Sonores (Sound Naps) / Sunday 11th May 2008
The ‘Siestes Sonores’ are coming back to the Visitation gardens. The Naps have now become a tradition and this year two DJ’s and no less than 12 artists will come and perform. Parents as well as children are welcome since the site is equipped with playgrounds.
11:00 – 21:00: Siestes sonores – Open to the public - free
Jardin de la Visitation – Rue Roger Radisson – Lyon 5e
Stereotype
Stereotype has been chosen to create this year’s visuals for the ‘Nuits Sonores’ festival. Stereotype, a Lyon graphic designer and illustrator, works on various medias and audio-visual supports, from street art to body painting.
